Thousands of years ago, the Skrulls developed an artifact to modify reality following the wishes of the user. It was the first Cosmic Cube, apparently created by forming an opening to a different universe. This universe was inhabited by mysterious beings called the Beyonders, who apparently wish to improve the development of sentient life.
An unknown element from that universe crossed the opening and became trapped in the perfect force cube created by the Skrull scientists. The emperor then stole the cube and declared himself a god, reigning for many years through the power of the cube. Meanwhile, no one knew that the Cube had the potential to become a sentient being, and over the years of abuse, became involuntarily imprinted with some of the emperor's traits, thus beginning to develop it's own personality. Since the Skrull emperor was a megalomaniac madman, the Cube also became a megalomaniac... uh, madcube, destroying entire star systems in the Andromeda galaxy. Eventually, the Cube would transcend the emperor's madness and develop its' own personality, changing its' body to look like a Skrull from the waist upwards. Motivated by its powers, he adopted the name of the Shaper of Worlds.
