The Illuminati are a covert 'think-tank' consisting of Mister Fantastic, Iron Man (Tony Stark), Professor X, Doctor Strange (Stephen Strange), Black Bolt, and Namor. They have met in secret for a number of years collaborating on information and strategy.
They each represent a certain something that is very special to the Marvel Universe – Namor, of course, is the king of 75% of the planet and represents a certain mindset; Tony Stark represents a certain type of hero – the Avenger type of hero, one who understands and appreciates that heroes can work with the government, rather than outside of it; Reed is the ‘science’ side of the heroes; Black Bolt represents the Inhumans, who are an important part of Marvel history and an important part of things that are to come, as was hinted at in House of M; Dr. Strange speaks for the mystical side of the Marvel universe, and Professor Xavier is there for the mutants. They all bring with them a unique viewpoint and perspective that isn’t shared by the others.
The Illuminati traveled to the Skrull homeworld to warn them not to invade Earth. But they get captured and studied before escaping.
With the threat of the Hulk's uncontrollable power, the Illuminati decided to send into exile on a peaceful planet. But the warp drive made an error and instead took the Hulk to Sakaar, where he slowly became ruler. But the warp drive exploded, killing millions on the planet and the Hulk took his remaining forces and the Warbound back to Earth to take revenge on the Illuminati.
Recently the group has disbanded over the Superhero Registration Act and the decision to send Hulk (Bruce Banner) into space.
Stark called hte Illuminati once again when the Skrulls were making their Secret Invasion of Earth, disguised as various heroes.

- Black Panther (T'Challa) was offered membership, but he declined, thinking that working behind other super-heroes' backs was a bad idea.
- While their involvement in Hulk's exile from Earth has been revealed, the true nature and history of the group still remains a secret to most of the world.
- There is no official team name. Illuminati is a name used by the creators and in solicitations.
